Thanks, everyone, for your heartfelt and intelligent responses.  Very cool.  Personally a little surprised to not have more push-back i.e. “you should only be so lucky people give a sh*t about your band” etc.  Maybe things are changing; I think musicians should not be so afraid to question youtube, filesharing etc — all the technologies that have made this new era a bizarre (good and bad) time to be making music.  You are a receptive bunch.  Thanks.
